English Ministry UPDATES

Sent Friday, June 19th, 2020

Dear English Congregation,

Did you know about Juneteenth?

Juneteenth is recognized as either a state holiday, ceremonial holiday, or a day of observance in 49 of the 50 states.  After over a century of celebrations, Juneteenth was first made official in Texas in 1980 and as late as North and South Dakota being the 48th and 49th states this year 2020, commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States annually on the 19th of June.  Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free.  It is also known as Emancipation Day, Jubilee Day, Freedom Day, and has been called “America’s second Independence Day.”

I wanted to share a few announcements with you sooner rather than later, so you can mark your calendars accordingly.

English Congregation Prayer Meeting, Saturday, June 27th at 10AM.  We want to continue to join together in prayer for our nation and world as the Covid-19 pandemic seems to be surging again, and protests continue to be inflamed further with Rashard Brooks killing in Atlanta.  This is also the same day our church will be delivering 400 care packages (masks, sanitizer, goodies) to our Linda Vista neighbors around the church with a short statement that we care for them and we stand for justice and mercy as well as an invitation to join us in our worship service.  Here’s the link for the prayer meeting:  https://zoom.us/j/91548595196

Panel Discussion on Race & Faith, Wednesday, July 1st at 7PM.  Special guest panelist, Jason Cha, Director of Intercultural Programs at Westmont College.  While organized for Aletheia fellowship by Daniel Lieu, this Panel Discussion will be open to the whole church.  Join here:   https://zoom.us/j/93441232372

EMT Care Team Game Night, Saturday, July 11th at 8PM.  Join us for fun and fellowship with some online games.  People from all groups and fellowships are invited and welcome.  Join using the following link:  https://zoom.us/j/92958162829

As always, may God’s grace be with you richly during these times.  Please do not hesitate to let us know how we can help or pray for you.  Here are links you can utilize: Prayer Request Form , Care Request Form respectively.

Sincerely in Christ,

Pastor Jimmy

Dear English Congregation,

  1. Praise God for the World Vision Global 6K Walk for Water we participated in last weekend.  Here’s a link to pictures

  1. Also, I wanted to share with you this puritan prayer called the “Valley of Vision”

Lord, high and holy, meek and lowly,

Thou has brought me to the valley of vision,

where I live in the depths but see thee in the heights;

hemmed in by mountains of sin I behold

Thy glory.

Let me learn by paradox

that the way down is the way up,

that to be low is to be high,

that the broken heart is the healed heart,

that the contrite spirit is the rejoicing spirit,

that the repenting soul is the victorious soul,

that to have nothing is to possess all,

that to bear the cross is to wear the crown,

that to give is to receive,

that the valley is the place of vision.

Lord, in the daytime stars can be seen from deepest wells,

deepest wells,

and the deeper the wells the brighter

Thy stars shine;

Let me find Thy light in my darkness,

Thy life in my death,

Thy joy in my sorrow,

Thy grace in my sin,

Thy riches in my poverty

Thy glory in my valley.

  1. Prayer & Social Hour during Monday Lunch 12-1pm is still going on: (come join us)

Update (May 4 - May 10)

Dear English Congregation,

  1. First, I want to share the youtube link for the recorded worship from this past Sunday.  A shout out to all those who contributed and worked hard for weeks to make that happen.

  1. EMT Game Night- Saturday, May 9th, 8pm (slight change from 7pm in the previous email).  Here's the link:

https://zoom.us/j/98293656154

  1. Many of you may be wondering how long this is all going to last?  Even when the shelter in place order is lifted and we move from phase to phase of reopening, how long will we wear masks?  How long will we have to maintain social distancing?  How long, O Lord?  In Psalm 13, David asks this question (4x), please note how he ends the psalm.

1 How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever?

How long will you hide your face from me?

2 How long must I take counsel in my soul

and have sorrow in my heart all the day?

How long shall my enemy be exalted over me?

3 Consider and answer me, O Lord my God;

light up my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death,

4 lest my enemy say, “I have prevailed over him,”

lest my foes rejoice because I am shaken.

5 But I have trusted in your steadfast love;

my heart shall rejoice in your salvation.

6 I will sing to the Lord,

because he has dealt bountifully with me. (ESV)

May we trust in God's steadfast love and rejoice in His salvation even as we wait during this global pandemic.

  1. Once again, if you have any prayer or care needs, please let us know by responding to this email or via the links below

Update (April 13 - April 19)
Sent Monday, April 13th, 2020

Christ is Risen!  He is Risen Indeed!

We trust you had a glorious Easter weekend celebrating our risen Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!

Continuing on in 1Corinthians 15, be encouraged by Christ's victory over sin and death, and thus, let us continue to stand firm!

56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.  58 Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.

  1. Here are the Zoom links for the Prayer & Social Hours for this week:  Note: we will only be holding it for Monday lunch and Thursday evenings only.  We're also looking to begin a monthly game night, so be on the lookout for that in the coming weeks.

Monday LUNCH hour: 12pm-1pm

https://zoom.us/j/547217540

  1. Praise God in the past few weeks, the Care Team has delivered communion elements, helped seniors with groceries as well as tech issues, and been reaching out to the body! Also, we praise God for some Aletheians who volunteered with another church to help with a food bank.  Some members of CEC have donated blood. And other members have donated masks to local hospitals!  Praise God for the church being the hands and feet of the gospel message in word and in deeds!

The Care Team is looking for more ways to reach out to the local community, such as doing something nice for our healthcare workers.  Contact us via this email or Kelly Lam directly if you're interested.

  1. As always, if you have a prayer or care requests you can submit them via the links below.  We are here for you!
  • A Prayer Request Form has been created for you to submit any prayer requests for yourself or someone you know.

Update (April 6 - April 12)
Sent Monday, April 6th, 2020

Greetings CEC family,

On this Holy Week let us remember the death and resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ from the words of the Apostle Paul which gives us much hope: 1Corinthians 15:20-22

20 But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21 For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. 22 For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.

Reminder:  Good Friday Service this Friday, April 10th 7:30pm  please note we will be celebrating communion during this service, please prepare grape juice and bread (or substitutes) for yourselves or email us (emtcareteam@cec-sd.org) and EMT Care Team will deliver communion elements to your doorstep.  Link for the worship service is here: https://zoom.us/j/492848437
